A Girl Named Grace Review and Giveaway!

Title: A Girl Named Grace
Author: Janna Lafrance
Genre: Fiction, Inspirational

Page Count: 317 Pages
Published: October 2012 by Safehouse Media
Rating: 5/5
When Grace’s perfectly constructed life is shattered by unthinkable tragedy, she is forced to revisit her past and the secret world she had convinced herself was a fairy tale—a world where angels appear on rooftops and the Jewish man named Jesus meets with her and leads her on a path to healing and intimacy with her Creator.

At first, Grace thinks she is experiencing hallucinations or possible episodes of psychosis brought on my the trauma of recent events, however as time progresses, she starts to realize that these beings she is encountering are more real than she could possibly imagine. As the mysteries of the supernatural realm begin to unfold around her, she gains the courage to journey into dark memories that she had spent nearly a lifetime trying to forget, and is finally able to embrace hope for a future she had never thought possible.

My Review:

Grace reached the lowest of lows. She was kicked while she was down and found herself utterly hopeless--but it was in that place that she found Him.

A Girl Named Grace is a beautiful love story, but not in the conventional sense. It's about a broken girl coming to life again as she comes to know the uncompromising and unsurpassing love of the One who saved her.

Grace is a real and relatable character that comes to life on the page. When the "God-man" comes into her life he is portrayed in such a real and true way that I could feel His words as I read them.

I loved the style and voice of Janna's writing. I was drawn into Grace's story from the very beginning, and felt her pain and triumphs right along with her. There were moments that my heart squeezed in my chest, and moments when tears fell of their own accord, but I was left with a happy heart and a greater understanding of God's love.

Favourite Quotes:

"..the puzzle of her carefully pieced together life was growing weary of holding itself together..." Pg 1

"She found it difficult to tear her eyes away, even though her insides drew back like fingers from a flame." Pg 3

"Her entire life had been built over a fault line , and today, as the past and future collided with catastrophic force, the earth opened up and Grace began to fall." Pg 30

"The raw emotion that came from somewhere in the deep, dark cavern of her soul rose like lava, burning its way through her chest and throat. She couldn't contain it and didn't want to. Not here. Not when stifling it meant its fire would only continue to scorch her heart and any ability she had left to love and be loved."  Pg 87

"In spite of and in defiance to the natural inclination to survive and protect oneself, love is a force that is released the moment an individual chooses the well-being of another before himself." Pg 117

What does it mean when your school is voted the most dangerous

It's time to kick some hellion butt...

After not really surviving her junior year (after all, she did die), Kaylee Cavanaugh has vowed to take back her school from the hellions causing all the trouble. She's going to the find a way to turn the incarnations of Avarice, Envy and Vanity and the rest on each other. And so she–and her gang–make plans to protect her friends and finish this war, once and forever.

But then she meets Wrath. And Kaylee realizes that she's closer to the edge than she's ever been. Especially when one more person she loves is taken...

My Review:

I am reviewing right after putting the book down. I feel like my heart is too big for my chest.

Picking up right after Before I Wake left off, this final Soul Screamers book takes you on a whirlwind journey as Kaylee tries to gain vengeance against the hellion of greed.

I didn't know what to expect from the book focused on wrath, but I have to say that angry Kaylee is my favourite so far. The fierceness of her righteous anger gave her a backbone of steel that made her a force to be reckoned with.

The frustration that came with their hopeless fight against impossible odds kept me glued to the page, wondering how on earth (or the Netherworld) were they going to defeat the immortal forces that opposed them.

As with other Rachel Vincent books, I didn't see the twists coming, and I was an emotional wreck and a giddy fool throughout the span of this book.

I feel like I'm not ready to let go of this world, but I am happy with how things were left.

Well done Mrs. Vincent, well done.

Fav. Quotes (minus the spoilery ones):

"You expect me to believe that if someone threw a pie in your face at a funeral you wouldn't lick your lips?" Sabine - pg 12

"Oh, that will never be enough for me, little fury." Ira - pg 158

"We owe the world something. We owe the world everything." Kaylee - pg 220

"This is the most frighteningly beautiful mouth I have ever seen." Tod - pg 314

"The pain begins, and within seconds it consumes me." Kaylee - pg 341

Shadow Bound - 5 Stars

Title: Shadow Bound
Author: Rachel Vincent
Series: Unbound #2
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Page Count: 439 Pages
Published: May 22nd 2012 by Mira
Rating: 5/5

If you live in the dark long enough, you begin to forget the light...

Kori Daniels is a shadow-walker, able to travel instantly from one shadow to another. After weeks of confinement for betraying her boss, she's ready to break free of the Tower syndicate for good. But Jake Tower has one final job for Kori, one chance to secure freedom for herself and her sister, Kenley, even if it means taking it from someone else....

The job? Recruit Ian Holt-or kill him.

Ian's ability to manipulate the dark has drawn interest from every syndicate in the world, most notably an invitation from Jake Tower. Though he has no interest in organized crime, Ian accepts the invite, because he's on a mission of his own. Ian has come to kill Tower's top Binder: Kori's little sister.

Amid the tangle of lies, an unexpected thread of truth connecting Ian and Kori comes to light. But with opposing goals, they'll have to choose between love and liberty....

My Review:

Another fantastic book from Rachel Vincent! I went in with high expectations and I wasn't disappointed at all.
I was initially put off by the change of narrators as I wasn't done with Liv and Cam yet, so I was surprised that this book wasn't focused on them. One chapter in and I was drawn right into Ian and Kori's story equally as much as the first book.
Kori is dark a jaded, and Ian is full of secrets. I loved delving into the twisted story they unravelled together.
And the villains! I thought Ruben was bad, but Tower makes him look tame.
Great read. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Fav. Quote(s):

"Jake Tower was the heart of the Tower syndicate. We—the initiates—were the lifeblood of the organization, but Tower was the pump that kept us flowing through the veins and arteries of this living machine." Kori (narrating) - Ch 1

""I would make fire rain from the heavens to smite your enemies with the flames of our shared rage."" Ian - Ch 22

Top 10 Reads of 2012

Here are my top 10 favourite reads of 2012. In the order I read them in:

1) In the Forests of the Night by Kersten Hamilton ☆☆☆☆☆

I was so very exited when Kersten Hamilton gave me a copy of "In the Forest of the Night", I loved "Tyger, Tyger" and was waiting eagerly for a sequel. It didn't disappoint. Another great YA read from a great new author.

2) If I Die by Rachel Vincent ☆☆☆☆☆

Wow. Just, Wow! I was on the edge of my seat for this entire book - read it a day. This is one of my favourite series and top 5 authors.

3) Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent ☆☆☆☆☆

In the same series as "If I Die", this was my favourite book in the series so far!

4) Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris ☆☆☆☆

I was on the edge of my seat with this one. I have no idea how Charlaine is going to wrap up this series. If you had asked me two books ago how I thought this would all end I would have had a pretty good idea, but now everything is tossed up in the air and I have no clue. A great story in Sookie's universe and a must read

5) Room by by Emma Donoghue ☆☆☆☆☆

I was a little late on this one, but a friend of mine was raving about it, so I finally caved and decided to see what all the fuss was about. I'm very glad I did. It's a touching and riveting book that captured a terrifying situation in a non-threatening way so that I was comfortable reading it.

6) The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa ☆☆☆☆☆

Now that was an epic journey! Ash's POV was refreshing, Puck and Grim were hilarious and entertaining as usual, and the cast of other characters were both unexpected, and wonderful. Loved every minute of reading this!

7) Divergent by Veronica Roth ☆☆☆☆☆

So good I can't even believe it. This is how dystopian should be done!

8) Insurgent by Veronica Roth ☆☆☆☆☆

I love Four. Now that we have that out of the way; this was another great book from Veronica Roth. and a must read if you like Divergent.

9) Queen in Exile by Donna Hatch ☆☆☆☆☆

I was very pleasantly surprised with this book. I bought it to be my "Q" book for the alphabet reading challenge and am so happy that I did! This adventure/journey with a bit of magic thrown in was just the right tempo and the relationship between the two main characters was executed and progressed perfectly. I also liked that it is a stand-alone novel, but I felt like I had read a whole series - nothing was left lacking and the character and world development were exceptional.

10) Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson ☆☆☆☆☆

If you hang around me at all you have probably heard me quote at least one of Jenny Lawson's stories. She is hilarious and honest and the only Memoir I have ever read. I laughed out loud so many times I lost count ail reading this. One of my all-time favs.
